How Trackers Estimate Caloric Burn and Accuracy

How Do Trackers Calculate Caloric Burn?
Trackers like the Apple Watch or Fitbit estimate caloric burn by using data such as your heart rate, age, height, and weight. This allows for a more accurate calculation because heart rate provides a direct indication of exercise intensity. However, it’s important to note that these numbers are still approximations, as they cannot account for individual factors such as metabolic health and genetics.
Trackers without heart rate monitoring are less accurate since they rely solely on static stats like height, weight, and age.
How Accurate Are Trackers?
All fitness trackers have a margin of error. The primary reason they are approximations is that they cannot fully factor in unique aspects of your metabolism and body composition. However, wrist trackers with heart rate monitoring—such as the Apple Watch, Fitbit, and Garmin—provide the most accurate estimates currently available.
Why Is This Data Helpful?
Connecting a tracker to the 3M Coaching App can be beneficial for both you and your coaching team. It provides additional insights like caloric burn, step count, and heart rate data. While we primarily evaluate progress based on weekly check-ins, having accurate tracker data adds another layer to the overall picture.
